Campton Hills trustees approved the annexation of almost 1,000 acres for a new housing project after a packed and sometimes heated three-hour meeting.
The development, led by Geneva-based Shodeen Development, calls for 900 homes and a large portion of land preserved as open space.
Key points:
The plan sets aside 440 acres — nearly 59% of the land — as open space, with the Kane County Forest Preserve District moving to purchase that acreage.
Supporters praised the project’s relatively low density compared to past proposals, while opponents warned of higher taxes, strained police and fire services, and a lack of funding for local libraries and park districts.
Critics also raised concerns about water and sewer service costs, with officials suggesting the possibility of a TIF district to help cover infrastructure needs.
