Campton Hills trustees approved the annexation of almost 1,000 acres for a new housing project after a packed and sometimes heated three-hour meeting.

The development, led by Geneva-based Shodeen Development, calls for 900 homes and a large portion of land preserved as open space.

Key points:

  • The plan sets aside 440 acres — nearly 59% of the land — as open space, with the Kane County Forest Preserve District moving to purchase that acreage.

  • Supporters praised the project’s relatively low density compared to past proposals, while opponents warned of higher taxes, strained police and fire services, and a lack of funding for local libraries and park districts.

  • Critics also raised concerns about water and sewer service costs, with officials suggesting the possibility of a TIF district to help cover infrastructure needs.
