Thanks to American Legion Post 504, six Batavia High School graduates will be getting a leg up on their medical careers.
And that’s not the only way they’re giving back this year. The local veterans group is also gearing up to hand-deliver gift bags to elderly veterans living in Batavia retirement and nursing homes this fall.
Here's what to know:
Scholarships for future medics: Post 504 awarded six $1,000 scholarships this year to Batavia High School graduates heading into medical fields.
Boys State sponsorship: The group also sent two local high schoolers to Boys State, a weeklong camp where teens study and practice civics.
Gift bags for local vets: Come fall, volunteers will put together roughly 130 gift bags for veterans living in local retirement and nursing homes, through the group's "Gifts for Yanks" program that aims to boost morale for vets.
Beyond fundraising: Post 504 also provides Honor Guard services alongside the Batavia VFW for veterans who have died, and hosts a monthly coffee social where local vets and military-minded folks can connect.
The money for these initiatives comes from two annual fundraising drives outside local stores and restaurants, where Legion members collect donations from the community.
Post 504 meets the third Tuesday of every month at 7PM at the VFW canteen on South River Street, open to any local veteran looking for connection and resources.
