Batavia recently enacted new rules for e-bikes, e-scooters, and other motorized wheeled devices, and the city is focusing on making sure residents actually understand them.

The police department and city have kicked off a campaign called "Roll Smart" to explain where these devices can legally go, who can ride them, and which ones aren't allowed on public property at all.

Here's what to know:

  • The new rules are extensive: The recently adopted ordinances spell out where certain devices may be ridden, set age and safety requirements, and ban some high-powered devices from public property entirely.

  • Why now? Summer is peak riding season, and the city is pairing the rollout with general bike-safety reminders to cut down on confusion and close calls as more people get out on wheels.

  • What to expect: Officers and members of Batavia's Active Transportation Advisory Commission will be at community events through the summer, including the Batavia Farmers' Market, handing out materials and answering questions.

The campaign also includes short safety videos featuring Rotolo Middle School students, and the full breakdown of what's allowed is posted at bataviail.gov/e-mobility.
