During the August 12 Committee of the Whole meeting, Batavia officials debated how best to recognize causes like suicide prevention and cancer awareness.
While some members supported proposals to special flags at City Hall, most preferred sticking with proclamations instead of opening the door to ongoing flag debates.
Key things to know:
A request to fly a suicide prevention flag in September failed in a 9–3 vote, but the council unanimously backed a proclamation for Suicide Awareness Month.
A pediatric cancer awareness flag proposal for October also failed by the same margin, though officials approved proclamations for Cancer Awareness Month and Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.
Some aldermen expressed concern about creating a “slippery slope” of requests for the city flagpole, stressing the need for consistency and neutrality when it comes to what flies on city property.
Supporters emphasized the personal impact of suicide and cancer and the visibility flags could bring, particularly to local non-profits like Suicide Prevention Services.
