Batavia officials have recommended a new five-year contract that would overhaul the Police Department’s body- and in-car-camera systems, adding transcription tools, language translation, and tighter integration with regional systems.
The upgrade comes with a higher price tag but aims to save staff time and modernize how footage is managed.
Pricing considerations: While bids ranged from roughly $325-350K up to $764K (Axon Enterprise Incorporated), the department recommended the package for its compatibility with neighboring agencies and Kane County’s systems.
AI-powered tools: The new system includes automatic transcription and search, auto-redaction for FOIA videos, live language translation, and GPS tracking of officers during foot pursuits.
Budget impact in 2026: The contract will begin in 2026 and totals $765K over five years. For comparison, Batavia’s current body and car camera contracts cost slightly more than $200K combined over the previous five years.
Efficiency and recruitment benefits: Officials said the tools should reduce staff workload, improve public accountability processes, and make the department more attractive to new recruits by keeping up with modern tech used elsewhere.
City Council will vote on final approval at an upcoming meeting.
