The Batavia City Council voted unanimously at its August 18 meeting to approve a contract for demolition of the old Tin Shop building at 106 North River Street, a long-debated property that has been in a state of disrepair for some time.
Key things to know:
Bid awarded: The city awarded the contract to Fowler Enterprises LLC, which previously handled a demolition project on Park Street.
Historic preservation: Fowler will be responsible for removing and turning over the building’s historic “ghost sign” on the north side to the city. Officials are also exploring ways for local woodworkers and residents to reclaim some of the building’s old hardwood lumber for reuse.
No buyers for rehab: The city had previously marketed the property for potential sale or rehabilitation, but no buyers came forward.
Timing: The demolition is expected to occur by mid-November.
