Batavia’s girls flag football program got its start around a kitchen island.
That’s how Rotolo Middle School coach Annie Fricot described it Tuesday night, as she received the district’s Bulldog Award at Tuesday night’s school board meeting. The program she built led to Batavia High School fielding its first girls flag football team.
Here’s what to know:
The road to BHS: Fricot, along with another parent volunteer, launched the middle school program almost three years ago. She later supported families that pushed for a high school team, which ultimately got approved and just wrapped up its first season.
Glowing feedback: Several current and former players spoke, calling Fricot a coach they trust and look up to on and off the field. One BHS freshman mentioned that the last time she stood at that podium, she was asking for a team. Now she’s finished her first season.
High standards, high support: Board member Aaron Kilburg has volunteered as an assistant coach under Fricot for the past two years. In a statement read at the meeting, he said she coaches by the principle of “high standards with high support,” and that one doesn’t work without the other.
RMS teacher Jeff Thomas brought the nomination forward.
“Every yard gained, every touchdown scored, and every varsity letter earned by our high school players this season belongs to the foundation that she built,” he said.
