Four local businesses are inviting the community to celebrate Día de los Muertos this weekend with community altars, food, and remembrance.
El Taco Grande, 63rd St Apothecary, MoJo Handbags Et Cetera, and New Moon Vegan will offer a chance for residents to take part in a cherished Mexican tradition that honors those who have passed.
Here’s what to know:
- El Taco Grande (downtown Batavia) will host a community altar from October 31 through November 2. Locals can drop off photos or small mementos starting October 28, which will be placed alongside traditional offerings like pan de muerto and favorite snacks of loved ones.
- 63rd St Apothecary and MoJo Handbags Et Cetera (10 E. Wilson Street) will hold a four-hour gathering on Sunday (11/2) featuring a shared altar, light refreshments, tamales, and a tarot reader offering insight throughout the evening.
- New Moon Vegan (also downtown) will host its ofrenda on Sunday from 10AM-1PM. Get the details.
- People are encouraged to bring a photo or small token to contribute, creating a colorful community display.
These events center around the ofrenda — a Mexican Día de los Muertos tradition featuring an altar built to welcome the spirits of departed loved ones. It’s typically adorned with photos, candles, marigolds, and meaningful items meant to guide and comfort the souls as they visit.
