Batavia officials approved the city’s Fiscal Year 2026 budget along with the 2025 property tax levy, setting the financial plan for the year ahead while balancing rising costs and long-term planning needs.

The approved budget outlines how the city will fund day-to-day services like police, fire, and public works, while also investing in major infrastructure projects and future facilities — including a planned police department building.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Property tax impact explained: The city says the overall increase for all ratepayers is 13.1%, which translates to about $125 more per year for the owner of a $400,000 home, bringing the total annual city portion to $1,077.

  • Taxes and rates changing: The city also approved a new 0.5% home-rule sales tax (excluding groceries, prescriptions, vehicles, and most services) to help fund a future police facility, plus utility rate increases for electric (3%), water (3%), and sewer (8%) tied to infrastructure upgrades.

  • Budget size and gap: Total revenues across all funds are projected at about $151.7 million, with $161.4 million in expenditures, meaning roughly $9 million will be covered using reserves.

  • Staff additions: The city budgeted for two police officers, two firefighters, two management analysts, a part-time administrative assistant, and an intern.

Looking ahead, city officials said the budget also supports major capital projects in 2026, including roadway improvements, underground electric lines, sewer lift station work, and the final phases of lead service line replacement.
