Batavia's approach to reducing single-use plastic bags yielded significant results in its first year. The 10-cent fee, implemented on July 1, 2023, aims to encourage reusable bag use while funding local green projects.

By the numbers:

  • Adoption: 18 participating stores sold over 3.2 million single-use bags

  • Total revenue: $323,971.10

  • City's share: $194,382.70 (just under initial $200,000 projection)

The funds will support various environmental projects in FY 2025, including energy audits, public education campaigns, reusable bag distribution and parkway tree planting.

City officials will discuss the program's success and future plans at the upcoming Committee of the Whole meeting. Residents can expect to see these initiatives roll out starting January 2025.
