Prairie Centre in St. Charles is already home to hundreds of new apartments and a growing mix of commercial space. Now, the first new “outlot” project is on deck.

Curing this week’s city council meeting, officials are preparing to vote on plans for The Gardner School, a new childcare facility proposed along Lincoln Highway (Route 38).

Here’s what to know:

  • New childcare facility: The project is proposed as a childcare facility called The Gardner School on the eastern portion of Prairie Centre’s outlot along Lincoln Highway (Route 38).

  • Project details: Plans call for a 12,209-square-foot, single-story brick building with parking to the north and west and landscaping throughout the site.

  • How it will connect: The site would use an existing shared access drive off Route 38, plus internal cross-access drives. A planned east-west drive along the north side of the outlot will also be completed as part of this project to improve connectivity within Prairie Centre.

  • Sidewalk sticking point: The project moved forward with officials supporting a new Route 38 sidewalk requirement, but the developer pushed back. Documents show that the city was consulting its attorney on whether it could legally require it as a condition of approval.

Learn more about the project in this city agenda document (beginning on page 9).
