A St. Charles East student's artwork is now on display in the middle of downtown St. Charles, painted across Riverside Avenue by dozens of community members over Mother's Day weekend.
The St. Charles Arts Council wrapped its fifth annual "Paint the Street" event last weekend, transforming the Riverside Avenue and Walnut intersection into a sprawling public mural. This year's design came from St. Charles East senior Corinna Dietz, who worked alongside local artist and mentor Howard Russo to bring the concept from sketch to street.
Here's what to know:
The “Paint the Street” concept: The Arts Council pre-maps the full design before the public arrives, then invites families and residents to fill it in together. The whole mural comes together in just a few hours.
The design marks a local milestone: This year's sponsor was The Arcada Theatre, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in September. Corinna's design incorporates Art Deco colors as a nod to The Arcada's centennial branding ,blending her original vision with the theater's iconic aesthetic.
Corinna isn't new to public art: She volunteered with last year's "Paint the Street" and also participated in the SCAC's "Banners in the Park" program, making this year's design a natural next step.
The mural is still visible at Riverside Avenue and Walnut in downtown St. Charles. Organized by the Arts Council, Paint the Street takes place every May.
