A local construction site is gradually beginning to resemble the pedestrian oasis promised in the original vision.

But some work on 1st Street Plaza remains.

The city recently announced that the fencing on the property now primarily encircles the trellis area. They plan to soon install railings for the site that are required by code, at which point that section will open to the public.

That is anticipated to happen in April.

Work continues on other features such as solar panel installation, landscape and trellis lighting, beacons on the kiosks and additional electrical work expected to be completed in May.

The city is still working with the State of Illinois regarding traffic signal modification where the plaza meets Route 64.

Two new informational kiosks have also been installed, which are intended to serve as a resource for pedestrians looking to navigate and enjoy the downtown district.
